Bowling Leagues

Most bowling alleys will run bowling leagues as they generate a significant portion of their revenue from bowling enthusiasts who play the game competitively at an amateur level.  League games will typically take place on a certain night of the week and several lanes will be set aside especially for these games. In some cases local teams will organise bowling league tournaments against other teams in the local area and sometimes these tournaments may incorporate many teams from across the county.

However, when people refer to bowling leagues they may not be specifically referring to ten pin bowling leagues. In the UK especially the term bowling league is actually more likely to be referring to the game of bowls. Bowls is quite different from ten pin bowling, it is usually played outside and the object of the game is to roll the bowls so they land as close as possible to a marker called a jack. This game is especially popular in the UK and is often thought to be the reserve of older people, although they are examples of younger bowls players. A bowling league is likely to consist of several individual players’ competition to win. Although it is possible to play bowls in teams also. A bowling league will typically be comprised of local players who are members of a bowling club. The club will most likely own the bowling green when the bowling league games are likely to take place.
